TTMT #3 Social Media Talk!

by Healthy Diva on December 3, 2013

Happy Tuesday friends! Today brings the weekly edition of “Talk To Me Tuesday.”

ttmt TTMT #3 Social Media Talk!

This weeks topic is Social Media, I thought this was a good topic to get feedback on since I have some positives and negatives about it.

Social Media The Good and Bad

I know we all have social media in our lives, wether its facebook, twitter, instagram, or other types of social media.  I can classify myself as a social media whore ( sorry, lol ) but I am on the facebook, twitter, and instagram daily, instagram I am on the most and I blow up the feed daily on there.

I love social media, I use it for my blog mostly, but on facebook I do have my personal page too that I have to connect with family out of state and friends.

Social media is great for me to connect with other bloggers, brands, and companies. I have really connected with some awesome companies on twitter and instagram as well. Social media has that positive for me, but it also can be a negative too in ways.

For instance facebook is a social media platform that I feel can be bad for some, can we talk about oversharing too much and how people think it is a diary of their life?

Yeah, some people share too much on facebook, vent way too much, and share way too much. Kind of crazy when I see some crazy updates of people talking trash on an ex or sharing a little too much about their personal life, yikes! Lol.

Twitter can be bad for this too, you get angry and you automatically tweet something out of anger and boom it is out there for all to see. You finally calm down and it is too late to take back what you wrote, it was already out there for all to see! Some people need to just calm down before they write something on facebook or tweet something as well! I see this happen on insagram as well, but more on facebook and twitter.

Think before you write something out on social media, always think before! You can’t take back what you wrote!

So social media for me is more of a positive, I have not posted a update or tweet I have regretted yet or had to erase. I know it can happen to the best person just being mad or just not thinking, but try to remember to stop before you write something and also remember that some things are better left unsaid!

Now I want your feedback…

  •  Do you feel social media has its positives and negatives?
  • What negatives do you feel social media has? Positives?

And that’s a wrap for this weeks edition of #TTMT, don’t forget you can submit a topic or questions every week, just email me at healthydivaeats@hotmail.com. Have a great day!

totally agree with all points! and yes some people think facebook is a diary lol!! seriously, over sharing is unnecessary – keep that drama (and dirty laundry!) to yourself, people!! sometimes i think people fall victim to the comparison trap on social media, but i always remind myself that i don’t post EVERYTHING and i choose my most flattering pictures, so i assume other people do, too. and if not… well i’m fooling myself i suppose! haha

I agree 100% with all of the statements you made about social media! Sometimes people share waaayyyy too much or post when they’re angry and it makes me cringe. I do love Instagram and am obviously obsessed with it ;)

I have a personal FB that I share mostly running/racing and it is also how I connect with running buddies and groups. I love it for that reason. It seems like most events are post on FB, rather than email about getting together,so it is helpful there.

I do hate how much info can get out there though, which is why I really filter what I post. I also don choose to put too much personal info out there outside of running and I choose not to post pics of my kiddo after some scary things happened to my very good friend.

I’m so glad I learned what to share and not share on social media back when I was in high school. Haha those posts and pictures are long since buried!!

Social media is definitely a positive for me. Since I grew up with it, I have learned my lessons in how to properly use it, and now I love it so much and think it is such a great tool that I want to make it my career. I definitely see oversharing on Facebook the most, and personally I typically only post picture albums. One of my biggest peeves about Twitter, though, are the people my age who make accounts under false names solely to Tweet while they’re drunk or to rant about things. Yeah, that really happens. Ugh.

I have a love hate relationship with social media. I used to use Facebook but there was so much negativity, less communication with family and way to much drama sometimes. I have enough on my own plate and don’t want all that drama! I also hate that Facebook kept my family from communication in other ways besides Facebook. My sister would message me something and I wouldn’t know unless I got on. So I finally just stopped using mine. I love Instagram and that’s what I use now. It’s a great place to keep track of my life and growth oft daughter. I also love the encouragement on there. I use it to help with my weight loss and follow those who are uplifting. One big thing that I dislike about every form of social media is that mothers (that I encounter) brag or compare about their child in an unhealthy way. I don’t mind a momma sharing milestones or their kid, in fact I love it. I just hate when I see them comparing, bragging over someone else’s child not meeting the same milestone, etc. we need to be encouraging! Motherhood is hard enough without all that mess. Great topic! Love you Katie!

I agree with you. I enjoy social media for many reasons. It’s great for my blog, but also being a stay at home mom – it makes it easier to connect with others during the day when I’m feeling a little lonely. Another negative I think is comparing one another… Most people don’t put all the “bad stuff” online making it easy to feel sorry for yourself when you’re looking at photos, statuses, etc. about how great everyone’s life is. This is why I think it’s important to make sure we don’t get TOO involved in it and take time to enjoy our own little lives rather than looking at everyone else’s all the time.

It’s funny, cause Social Media is not so popular yet here in Switzerland – we do have Facebook, but Instagram and Twitter is not famous at all – people stare at me as if I were crazy when I talk about it lol! But it’s ok, I feel that it definitely can be a little overwhelming sometimes and some people really just post too much haha :-)

I have strange relations with all these social pieces… Though I adore Instagram – surprisingly, how many “healthy” accounts with recipes and daily motivation it is possible to find. But I not so love Facebuk or the Twitter – that people place there the spontaneous thoughts… Ooh, simply it isn’t always good ;)

Very true!…but at the same time people need to be responsible for their choices and whether they allow it to become a negative. We can all control what we say and share – and that should be on our minds each time we sit down and write…once it’s out there – you can’t take it back…so is it really something you want to share?!?

Exactly, they do! I agree with you on that!

I also have to add, I hate how people will post some news on facebook before they even text you about it, or never do, then they expect you to know! :p

Fun post! And, I totally agree on your pros and cons! I look at some people’s FB statues and think did they really need to share that? Ha!

Loving your post – Great topic! I love and enjoy the connections and friendships I have made:) When I 1st delved into Social Media I went a little bit on overdrive and now I have cut way back on the time spent on social media. I prefer to get out and experience life in person – ha!

Since my husband is in IT, our household (including his mom and sister and son at times) gets grilled on what we put on Facebook. While it’s nice to share that you are about to go on vacation, or the new house that was just purchased, I always have to remind myself that by doing it on my phone, other people who are technically more savvy than myself can find out exactly where I live, and when I’m out. I don’t even get to share that “hey, i’m going on a date with my husband”, until the date is over and we are at home. It’s pretty sad on that level. It also makes me upset when people seem to use it as an anonymous bullying tool, especially the teens and tweens (or parents of the teens and tweens), even adults. We are constantly telling our 17 year old about what he puts out there and how it can be damaging (he tweets, even though we don’t tweet, I have found some of his tweets by googling it).

I agree with all you said too, the bullying on social media is so sad and disgusting. Yes, safety too when it comes to social media, that can be scary! Thank you for sharing your input!

Totally agree! Social media definitely has very good points & very bad points. I’ve met some of the best people and came across some of the angriest people on social media. I agree on the oversharing especially… always be cautious because anything you say can come back to bite you at anytime and you don’t know who’s out there reading it and creating drama for you because of something you wrote.

Another good topic! I’m still trying to think of one to submit. My brain is in lockdown mode with Christmas coming up so I’m blank…. haha maybe I should submit a stress-free Christmas topic!

I use Instagram & Twitter mostly to follow other runners and healthy living people. Instagram in my favortie and it insoires me to ge tout and go for a run or try new foods that I never knew about. Social media can be a good thing….and i am totally addicted to checking Instagram too! Facebook where I actually know people can be more of a downer than Twitter & Instagram sometimes where I have my “social media friends” I have not met in person yet.
